In Hiroshima Prefecture, the natural collection of oyster seedlings reached its peak in early July, with many producers believed to have secured sufficient seed. Since the poor harvest of 2017, stable procurement of oyster seedlings has continued each year.
According to a survey by the Fisheries Promotion Center, a settlement peak occurred in the waters around Daikokujima Island, lasting for six days. At its height, as many as 380 oyster spat were found attached to a single scallop shell.
This year, the rainy season ended earlier than usual, and the first peak arrived two to three weeks earlier than last year. In addition, a significant number of larvae were confirmed on another occasion, suggesting that further opportunities for seed collection are likely.
With many producers having already secured sufficient seed and additional collection still expected, Hiroshima is heading toward what promises to be a prosperous oyster farming season.
